The dishonesty behind his argument mirrors every other right wing gambit aimed at social engineering society. But the facts remains, their traditional outlook to family values is relative. Some people credit their success to not having ideal circumstances growing up. The trials and tribulations of not having parents forged their resilience and strong character. Quite honestly, it doesn't matter what your family situation is if schools are competent. Slum children in Africa walk many miles on an empty stomach to receive an education. They don't have ideal family conditions, or any of the bs excuses but they learn, sometimes under trees, because teachers are competent. Only America has a homework education system, the rest of the world does not. Learning happens at schools and parents aren't involved at all. Therefore, making this argument provides cover for institutions that are screwing over many people. The irony is, when children become "woke" then it's the universities, but when they don't learn anything, then it's the parents. If you believe that schools have the power to shape beliefs, then they should be able to mold a ghetto mind into a professional citizen. Finally, effort is necessary but it also has to happen in a conducive environment. Some of the scientists that worked on the Manhattan project were taken out of Auschwitz or Polish ghettos. They had to fight antisemitism before Jewish people could succeed. Similarly, racism has to be handled before black people can progress. Family, and all the right wing talking points will naturally fall into place once people have freedom.

I was a graduate assistant in EE and taught classes in the early 80s. I only had one student who was black. She was having trouble doing circuit analysis. I had her meet me in the library and I tried and tried to help her. In the end I had to give up because she was not able to do it. She would just me me a blank look. Very disappointing.
